Room of Medieval Art

Although literacy rates dropped drastically and artistic works became more religious, there are still depictions of books and reading from the medieval period.

This picture is called Monks Singing in the Office. It dates back to around 1439-1447. I was not able to find the current location of this illustration.

This painting is called Laurentius of Voltolina. It was created around 1350-60 and is currently in the Staatliche Museum Preussiischer Kulturbesitz in Portugal.

This tempura on wood painting is called Little Garden of Paradise and is by Meister des Paradiesgärtleins, a medieval German artist. It was painted around 1410-20 and is now in the Städel and Municipal Gallery in Frankfurt, Germany.

This illumination is from the Shrewsbury Book and was made during the 15th Century. The Shrewsbury book is now in the Royal Manuscript exhibition in the British Library.
